The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders categorizes early ejaculation as a disorder only if it is recurring or persistent. If it only happens to you once or twice, then you should not worry about it at all. The causes of premature ejaculation are wide-ranging. It can be due to psychological factors, biological issues, or can be brought about by certain psychotropic drugs (like serotonin blockers and inhibitors). When the premature ejaculation causes are chemically induced as in the case of drug-related factors, then they simply go away the moment the intake is stopped. Urinary tract infections can also play a major role in some untimely ejaculation cases. Psychological factors like anxiety, stress, and even guilt sometimes cause early ejaculation, but these are easily resolved without any psychiatric help once the underlying emotional issues disappear.

Here are just some of the most effective ways to prevent premature ejaculation or PE:

Reduce anxiety as much as possible. Hasty ejaculation is common among pubescent men who usually have infrequent sex. When they get in high levels of arousal, they have difficulty controlling themselves. This presents itself in the form of performance anxiety in sexual situations. The method of anxiety reduction differs from one individual to another. Hypnosis can help in some cases. Meditation or forms of imagery mental exercises can also do wonders for your sexual health. Most importantly, it is best if you can articulate your anxiety. This can be done with a partner, a trusted friend, and of course, a therapist. Your lack of confidence and your poor body image can greatly diminish your performance in satisfying your partner in bed. Bottling up your fears and anxiety will exacerbate the condition. Opening up and communicating your anxiety are almost always the best ways to deal with anxiety-related PE.

Control your pelvic muscles. When you hold your breath during sex, you produce muscle tension that results to ejaculating prematurely. So will the acts of flexing your abdominal muscles or supporting your body weight. Decreasing muscle tension will prevent hasty ejaculation because orgasm is directly related to heightened levels of muscular tension. Yoga, stretching, working out, and personal anxiety reduction techniques are just some of the many ways to reduce the pelvic and abdominal tensions that will lead to untimely ejaculation. (more…)
